Try, Tri, Triathlon!

It's triathlon season again. Remember Caleb's New Year's goal to do 2 triathlons this year? He's halfway to his goal. He and Ellen competed in the Daniel Island Kids Triathlon this morning - a 100 meter swim, 2 mile bike and 1/2 mile run. They had fun, although, once again, I think they secretly look forward to these races for the abundance of junk food at the end - including free ice cream this year! The gigantic slide jump castle with water running down it was also a nice reward for their hard work. The smell of competition lingered in the air and tickled Logan's nose. 2 more years little one, 2 more years. He can't wait. Caleb claimed 3rd place in his age group and Ellen took 8th! Way to go my little triathletes. They made me proud because they have been working so hard at swim team practice every morning. But, I must say, the thing that made me the most proud the entire morning was when Ellen saw a family from our neighborhood at the race. Their two children are very sweet and incredible athletes - coming in 1st and 2nd in their age groups. After the awards ceremony, Ellen saw them leaving and made a point to go out of her way to go and personally congratulate them for their stellar achievements. She didn't have to do that - it was crowded and they were a long way off. I would rather my kids finish dead last, but be filled with humility and graciousness and a love for others than to be the top star with an inward only focus. Now, if they can do both... well, that's not so bad either.
