Back from the birthday break to our adventure... Next stop - outside of Albany, NY to visit some friends in a town that I can't pronounce, much less spell. A Native American Indian name, I'm sure. One of the many blessings of the GFI ministry has been the like-minded families from all over the country (and world!) that we have gotten to know. Whenever we are in our Wilbur, we look up to see where some of these families are and we drop in on them. (Yes, we let them know ahead of time.)
We had a wonderful visit with the N. family and their 4 beautiful (inside and out) girls. When Caleb found out we'd be staying with this family and that they had 4 girls ranging in age from 11-17, he was not very excited. "All they'll want to do is sit around and talk. Boring," was his comment. Wrongo Caleb! As we pulled out of their driveway the next day he said, "That was awesome! They were so much fun!" They learned new crazy games, ran around a lot, ate ice cream and laughed, laughed, laughed. Thank you, N. Family! We sure appreciate your hospitality and fun times! (Despite some rain.)
Next stop... Lake Placid, NY in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Spent several days here climbing Whiteface Mountain (where the downhill ski events were)...
...hiking to several gorgeous waterfalls, checking out the ice rink, Bobsled run...
...and even rode a chairlift - which was a little scary holding a 3 year old on my lap, carefully watching a crazy little 7 year old next to me (and reminding them to not let their shoes fall!) and then trying to capture the event on film. Yikes! Rich was bravely holding a squirmy 7 month old on his lap with a 5 year old next to him. Where were the seat belts and safety harnesses? And why don't they stop to let me get everyone off and on?
The chairlift took us to the top of a mountain where the ski jump was located. We got to hike up to the top of the ski jump tower and peer down the run. I kept asking myself "Why would any sane person hurl themselves down this thing with 2 long wooden planks strapped to their feet?" Anyone picturing the Wide World of Sports introduction video clip from many years ago?
Later we were all thrilled to be able to watch some Olympic athletes and Olympic hopefuls practice their aerial ski jumps into a 75,000 gallon pool. Again... "Why?"
